Wedding Wednesday

Okay all my engaged couples planning weddings and honeymoons! This one’s for you! Not only do I recommend hiring a wedding planner, but hire a honeymoon planner (the fancy way to say a travel agent!).

When Landon and I were planning our wedding, it felt like we were constantly in the process of making 50 decisions at a time. Picking out the invitations alone involved close to 20 decisions…paper type, paper weight, font, calligraphy, width, border, engraved or printed…and it literally goes on!

Anyway – as immensely excited as I was for the honeymoon (I can’t even tell you how many swimsuits I tried on), I really did not have the time I wanted or needed to research all the potential honeymoon destinations! Of course, I constantly looked at resort photos and read blogs, but I really needed help from an expert who had been to the resorts to give me advice on the honeymoon planning process!

And that’s where Linda Terrill came in! Hiring Linda as our honeymoon travel agent was one of the best decisions we made during the wedding planning process. Some may say this is an outdated industry and there are enough travel sites that can do this for you, but let me tell you – nothing beats the individual and custom assistance that a live travel agent can do for you! She made the process easy and booked everything for us for our honeymoon trip of a lifetime! It started off with a quick 15 minute consultation where I explained what kind of honeymoon we wanted, our level of activity, our deal breakers and must haves and, of course, our budget.

Within a few days she sent me a proposal packet of 8 different honeymoon locations for us to look through and start envisioning what would most likely be the best trip of our lives! It was painless and so helpful to have it narrowed down to 8 luxury resorts and locations so I did not have to keep sorting through the dozens of random online recommendations. A review of our honeymoon in St. Lucia will be coming soon, but in the meantime, we’ve sat down with Linda to help answer your most burning honeymoon questions!

Q: How long have you been in the travel industry?

A: I’m somewhat of a newbie in the industry — ten years.  After completing my 45th cruise and helping many friends plan trips, I joined Brownell Travel, the oldest travel agency in the United States and a member Virtuoso, a network of the best luxury travel agencies in the world.

(Y’all – side note – we loved that she was a member of Virtuoso because we got so many upgrades and fun surprises/gifts at each of our resorts that we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.)

Q: What are your favorite types of trips to plan?

A: Cruises, safaris and customized trips to England, Scotland and Ireland as well as Italy and Greece.

(Another side note 😉 – She is currently planning a trip to Italy for my boss, so I’ll let ya know how that goes!)

Q: What is the benefit of using a travel consultant for planning your honeymoon?

A: We visit resorts on a regular basis to understand what makes them a good fit for couples, young families, singles and retirees.  We have strong relationships with the management teams at our Virtuoso-partner hotels, thus assuring our clients VIP service and added complimentary benefits.  After we get to know our client’s interests, if clients haven’t decided on a destination, we can help them select the best destination for their interests and budget.  A good example is clients who want to go to Hawaii, but don’t know which island and what they can expect on each island.

Q: What is your biggest piece of advice for couples planning their honeymoon?

A: Understand your budget.  If you have a “bucket list” resort in mind, but it doesn’t fit your budget, consider shortening the stay by one night to make the resort and destination fit.

(Sidenote from Kate – This is something we did. Though we went over our budget (ooooops!) we did decrease our stay by a couple of nights so we could upgrade our room and stay at nicer resorts, which we are both super pleased that we did.)

Q: What is the biggest mistake couples make when planning their honeymoon?

A: Trying to fit too many activities into the first part of their honeymoon, especially after a big wedding. Take a day or two to breathe and enjoy each other before the big excursions!

Q:What are your top 5 favorite honeymoon resorts?

A: Pairing Ladera Resort and Sugar Beach, St. Lucia; Four Seasons Bora Bora; Belmond Hotel Caruso on the Amalfi Coast; Ashford Castle, Ireland; and Rosewood Las Ventanas, Mexico.  This is not a resort, but rather an all-inclusive boutique cruise on Seadream with only 100 guests visiting small ports that big ships can’t get into, sleeping under the stars on their Balinese beds, and enjoying activities from their watersports marina.

Huge thank you to Artifact Uprising for sponsoring this post! While products were provided for this post, all opinions are my own.

If you do your wedding right, you have a blast surrounded by all of your loved ones – but it also goes by in a flash and some of it is bound to feel like a blur. Landon and I are coming up on our one-YEAR anniversary and are still hearing new stories from our wedding!

Hopefully, like us, you had a great wedding photographer (shoutout to Jackie Cooper!) to capture those moments you inevitably missed.

We have LOVED going back through our wedding photos and seeing the special day from every angle. It’s heartwarming to see the joy on our faces and those of our family and friends, and so fun to look back at the nuances of that decor we obsessed about for months.

We were looking for a way to immortalize those cherished memories to one day share with our kids and grandkids. Our answer came in a lay-flat photo album from our friends at Artifact Uprising!

Let’s talk about how easy it is to commemorate your big day. Just select your ideal size, choose one of their 40 fabulous fabric and foil combinations for the cover, and then pick the finish you want for your paper (our Lustre pages look and feel amazing!).

Then you’re on to the most fun part – sifting through all your wedding photos!

Artifact Uprising’s user-friendly design interface includes a photo bank and dozens of layout options to easily mix and match. We are still swooning over the full-page layout showing one of our favorite photos from our mountain wedding!

Seriously guys, the hardest part of assembling this album is choosing which incredible photos to use to remember the best day of your life.

These beautiful lay-flat albums make the perfect gift for the parents and in-laws on any holiday. We made one for both of our sets of parents, easily tailored to feature each respective family. We loved them so much we made one for us too. Treat yo self!

Psst! The traditional one-year anniversary gift is paper, too, so this is a perfect anniversary gift as well!

So, obviously, you’ve landed the hubby or wife of your dreams… but with a gorgeous photo album, your wedding can quite literally be the gift that keeps on giving!

Pro tip: Gift this with a pack of Kleenex, because there’s a good chance family members will tear up re-living the joy from your big day!

Happy Wedding Wednesday! If y’all checked out our wedding registry etiquette post for the bride and groom last week, you know how exciting, yet overwhelming registering for your own wedding can be!

But what about for the guest?! Buying the perfect gift and navigating the registry can be just as tricky! There are so many unwritten rules, so we are here to help break down some of those concerns. We are answering some of your biggest questions to help with the gift giving process for all your upcoming weddings. Enjoy!

How do I find their registry?

A link to the wedding registry should be included on the wedding website or their save-the-dates. Still can’t find it? Try Googling the full names of the couple and if they used a larger company for their site, it should pop up. Still can’t find it? Ask their parents or a close friend of theirs!

Should we send the gift in advance or bring it to the wedding?

Send the gift in advance. At the end of the wedding, the couple is usually whisked off and vendors are moving a million miles a second. To save any confusion or hassle moving gifts, just send your gift in the mail either before or after the wedding.

How much should I spend?

The traditional rule is to spend as much as the per-plate cost is. Nowadays, with wedding costs rising, this could be up to $300 a person, which is not always reasonable for every guest. Think about how good of friends you are with the couple. If you’re a distant friend or colleague, consider starting at about $50-$75 a person. If you’re family or really close, usually about $150 a person is nice.

Do we have to stick to the registry?

Yes, please do! The bride and groom put an unbelievable amount of time into crafting the perfect registry with what they would like included in their future home and life together. I know as a guest, it may not feel as personal buying off the registry, but I promise they will appreciate it.

If you’re really close to the bride and groom and know there is something they would absolutely love but didn’t include it in their registry, that’s fine. My best friend actually gave me the most incredible monogrammed napkins I have ever seen – not on our registry – but she knows me well and had them designed to match our china, so needless to say, I was obsessed. But don’t go off the registry simply for the sake of being more creative.

I was invited to a shower and the wedding. Do I bring two gifts?

Yes. It is still appreciated when the guests bring a gift to the shower and also send a wedding gift. The shower gift is usually a bit smaller than the wedding gift though!

Shop some of our favorite registry items!

Creating your wedding registry can be one of the highlights of the wedding planning process. Especially for the groom, who often times has a little more of an opinion on this process than the rest of the planning!

I mean, what’s more fun than picking out all of the beautiful new things with your fiancé that your loved ones will gift you to start your new home and life together as a married couple? So dreamy and exciting to think about! But, in this day and age, with all of the different products and types of registries, the process can be a little overwhelming. And if not done correctly, you might find yourself after your wedding wondering why you once wanted that salad spinner or why you didn’t register for the Vitamix. The last thing you want to deal with after the honeymoon is figuring out how to exchange gifts or return them for what you really want. So, do your homework with your fiancé on the front end and make sure you really think through all those fun items that for which you are registering.

So where do we begin?! There are so many different types of registries: the big box stores, the unique china store in your home town, the universal registry, the online-only registries…the options seem endless. There is no one-size-fits-all, but there are definitely better options than others, so for this Wedding Wednesday, we are answering all your wedding registry questions!

Enjoy and happy shopping (and scanning)!

When should we set up our registry?

Set up your registry as soon as you can after you get engaged. If you’re having an engagement party or showers, definitely make sure your registry is set up in advance of the parties so your guests know where to buy your gifts.

How many registries should we have?

I would recommend having a maximum of three. Much more than three can start to look a little tacky (sorry, guys). If you use an online universal registry like Zola, you really only need one!  However, if you want your guests to be able to have the option of picking your gift out in stores, consider adding just one traditional retail registry with your Zola registry like a Williams-Sonoma or a Pottery Barn.

What’s your favorite registry you used?

Throughout the wedding planning adventure, we tried tons of different registries. We started with three basic ones (or so we thought): Amazon, Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn. We thought between those three we could register for pretty much anything that we wanted. False – after a lot of broken china and crystal from Amazon, we removed this registry and added Neimans. We found the online portal and buying system tricky, so we removed this one and tried Bed Bath and Beyond. Still not totally satisfied, we finally tried Zola which I had heard a ton about but was not sure how I felt about the universal registry concept. GAME CHANGER. This was by far my favorite registry we used! We ended up removing all of our registries except for Zola and Williams-Sonoma (just so our guests had a box store option in case they wanted to see the product and buy in person).

And we’re finally back! Thank you all so much for your love and support while we were out of the office for our wedding and honeymoon!

We had a beautiful ceremony and reception in Vail, CO and we can’t wait to share more photos and details with you soon!

Our honeymoon in St. Lucia was absolutely wonderful. We enjoyed a relaxing stay up in the Pitons at Ladera followed by some quality beach time at Sugar Beach! Full reviews will be coming soon, but here are a few pics from the past few weeks!

Now back to party planning and hosting!

 Let’s do this thing!

Rehearsal dinner ready!

  We’re married!

 Mr. and Mrs.

 Can we stay forever?!

To all our future brides out there – this one is for you! We are thrilled to be partnering with Katherine from Bells and Barbells again for this edition of Wedding Wednesday! (PS- If you missed your last couple posts about the power house over at B&B, be sure to check out our posts here and here!)

Today we are talking all about the Top 5 Overall Full Body Exercises to help you crush your wedding day fitness goals! So if you have a wedding coming up or are looking for a little variety to your current workout, jump right in with us! So without further ado, take it away Katherine!

Bells and Barbells Top 5 Overall Full Body Exercises:

1) Thrusters – If you are looking to tone your shoulders, define your mid-line while torching calories and building a bodacious booty and quads, this exercise will become your new best friend!

Instructions: You can use a SandBag, Barbells, KettleBell(s) or DumbBells which makes adding this workout into your routine a breeze although it won’t feel that way about 5 reps in BUT it’s totally worth it! #crushitladies!

You are basically performing a proper squat (make sure to stay in your heals and push knees out) while holding weighted object(s) at chest and then driving that object(s) overhead using the momentum generated from coming out of the low squat position. #weddingdressgoals

2) Burpees–  A girl’s best friend!  This exercise is great because you can literally perform it anywhere and anytime. The beach, your apartment….get after it mama! You only live once and you’ve got once gorgeous body to rock! Tip* Do a set of 5-10 after each set of weights you perform in the gym to keep your heart rate up and add an extra challenge.

3) Rowing- This is a great cardio movement if you can find access to a rower at your local gym or Bells and Barbells studio.  It’s important to keep your each stroke/pull long and to use your legs in combination with your arms. Rowing is 60% Legs which most people aren’t aware of and it really makes a difference in the efficiency of your stroke.

4) Turkish Get-Up- This movement can be tricky to learn at first but once mastered, it can really take your coordination and core game up a notch! Most important thing to keep in mind while performing the movement is to make sure your arm stays locked as you hold the weight overhead and to pause at each change in the movement as you gradually go from a laying to a standing position.

5) Kettle Bell Swing- This is another one of my favorites because it does a fabulous job of challenging your booty along with the above exercises but can also help you strengthen your back, core, glutes and hamstrings. Most important thing to know when performing this movement is to make sure you only hinging at the hips in order to gain momentum with your swing and not squatting. I have seen so many incorrect variations of this movement so make sure you are keeping the bell close to your groin when swinging and to never over extend your back by engaging your glutes properly.

Couples showers are one of my favorite wedding trends these days! Traditionally, wedding showers are just for the bride; however, modern day weddings are now incorporating couples showers into the festivity mix!

Couples showers are more like a cocktail party and include both the bride and groom, and of course, their male and female friends! While the party may still incorporate the traditional games and presents, the themes are usually more co-ed friendly. There are numerous ways to celebrate the couple, but the theme should represent their personalities including stock the bar, the hunt is over, Mexican fiestas, outdoor BBQs, and of course, my personal favorite Colorado mountain theme!

Hey Wedding Wednesday friends! If you stopped by our Wedding Wednesday post last week, you read our interview with Katherine Bahlburg, owner of Bells and Barbells, which is the wedding focused fitness program here in Dallas.

Dang, ladies, I can’t tell you enough about how she and her team have completely changed the wedding planning season for me!

I started going to B&B because I wanted to find a program that was more tailored to me and would help with injury prevention while also helping me tone my body. Plus, what a huge perk to be working with trainers who are focused on my wedding and customize my workouts to my shower dates, photo sessions, and my dress! What more could a future bride want?!

Prior to starting the program, I had read and heard so many wonderful things about Katherine and the success of her program, so I decided to sign myself up! And honestly – anything that got me out of bed at 6 a.m. to work out would have been considered a win for me, but her program has proven to be so much more.

First of all! Katherine and her team are not just another training center. They have an incredible personal touch that helps everyone to succeed. Upon consultation, I talked to Katherine about my goals, my diet, my current workout regimen, my fitness injuries, and of course my wedding date, dress fittings and bridal shoots, so she could see how to focus my fitness plan. Every time I come in and work with her or one of her trainers, she already has a personalized plan for me for the day that addresses a specific injury or body part that I need to work on. No workout is the same and I can always tell how much time and energy they put into my personal plan. And that is just the start of the personalization that Katherine and her team offer!

Despite having a full portfolio of brides and grooms that she manages, Katherine texts me every Sunday to make sure that I have set my goals for the week, gone grocery shopping and created my meal plan, and then always checks in with me during the week to see how everything is going. How she keeps up with all of us is really beyond me, but that’s what makes this company so special! They are right there by my side the entire time, and this friendship and motivation helps all of her clients stay on track.

Happy Wedding Wednesday! If you’re like me, you’ve probably read up on a lot of different beauty regimens throughout the planning process and probably put in a few extra hours at the gym to try and look your absolute best for the big day! Besides the monthly facials and hair appointments, one aspect that I have really tried to focus on is fitness.

So if you’re in the DFW area, listen up! I have found the perfect wedding-focused fitness program that is customized to you and solely focused on your wedding fitness goals! What more could a future bride (or groom) want?!

Bells and Barbells is a Dallas-based fitness program owned by Katherine Bahlburg, who by the way, is crazy accomplished and has over 13 years of experience as an athlete, coach and trainer across the country (read more about her here)! Her company is 100% centered around your wedding and your health and fitness goals, which is perfect for the bride and groom looking for a tailored wedding program.

Katherine is revolutionizing the wedding fitness world, as there’s literally no other company like hers in the world. So local gals – you’re in luck! To get to know her better and learn more about her life changing program (seriously! Read my personal account here), I have sat down with Katherine to ask a few questions!

1. How did you start Bells and Barbells and how long have you owned your company?

I started Bells And Barbells a little under two years ago. Bells And Barbells came out of an idea and a desire to work with women that were driven and goal oriented. I wanted to create something unique and something that had never been done before, and I wanted to do it in such a way that the business would help fill in all of the gaps/missing links and lack of services commonly found in the fitness world. I wanted to create a full service wedding focused fitness business where brides can go to not only get into the best shape of their lives but to also be surrounded by a fun and exciting environment that also holds them accountable and eases the stressors of wedding planning.

2. What sets Bells and Barbells apart from other personal training studios?

Happy Wedding Wednesday! With the new year in full swing, many brides are kicking the planning process into high gear for their summer and fall weddings and making all those final big decisions. Besides the budget and guest list, one of the first decisions that needs to be made is the wedding venue!

The venue will determine the date based on their availability and then will help all those other wedding day details (style, formality, color, decor) fall into place! So what should you look at and think about as you are touring all those venues trying to pick the perfect place?! Here is the beginner’s guide to help you get started!

Photography by Lane Dittoe

Location

Location, location, location. Consider the distance and the travel costs you and a majority of your guests will have to get to the venue. Is there a certain city that is meaningful to you and your fiance? What will the weather look like in that particular location in your desired wedding month?

Style

You should have a general idea of the style, theme, and tone of your wedding before your reserve your venue. If you know you want a modern glam wedding, you may want to look into a sleek contemporary hotel ballroom or museum rather than a renovated barn. If you want a nautical-themed wedding, a harbor will better match your style than a wedding mill. We personally are going for a mountain elegant theme, so we chose a lodge styled venue at a ski resort.

Color

If you have a certain theme, style, or color palette in mind, make sure the coloring of the venue reflects or enhances your theme. They don’t have to match exactly, but you don’t want the walls, curtains, carpets, etc. to conflict with your style. For example, dated curtains can really clash with a modern and contemporary vibe.

Size

Create a general guest list before your venue search to ensure the room is large enough to accommodate the number of people on your guest list. You don’t want to book a venue that only holds 75 for a seated dinner when you have 200 on your guest list, and you also don’t want a venue that holds 400 when you only want to invite 75 because it will look empty!

Don’t forget to factor in space for the dance floor, bars, food stations, or buffet tables if these are elements you will be incorporating into your wedding. Often times, (and this is the situation in our case actually) if your guest list is close to the max capacity of the venue, you have to do a seated dinner because there is not enough space for buffet tables or stations. So just keep that in mind as well if the food service presentation is important to you.

Designated Areas

Ask the venue for a typical layout of the space for weddings. There should be logical places for the bars, tables, food, dancing, DJ/band etc. so the space doesn’t feel cluttered. Also, avoid venues with odd-shaped rooms so that it doesn’t mess with the flow of the wedding.
